ConditionA
Asthma
A long-term condition where airways become inflamed and narrow, causing wheeze and breathlessness.
Common symptoms
Wheezing, cough (especially at night), chest tightness, and shortness of breath. Symptoms often vary with triggers such as cold air, exercise, or allergens.
Managing asthma in BC
Work with your GP or respirologist on an action plan. Most controller and reliever inhalers require a prescription. Carry your reliever (e.g. salbutamol) if prescribed. Annual flu vaccination is recommended.
When to seek help
Use your action plan for worsening symptoms. Call 911 if reliever does not help, lips turn blue, or speaking full sentences is difficult.
